‘Big Love’ Calling It Quits After 5 Seasons

Polygamy drama’s next season will be its last

"Big Love" is calling it quits after five seasons on the air.

The upcoming season of the polygamy drama will be its final one, HBO announced on Thursday. It will have its premiere on Jan. 16.

“When we created 'Big Love' in 2002, we had a strong conception of the journey the Henrickson family would make over the course of the series, of the story we had to tell,” said series creators Mark V. Olsen and Will Scheffer in a statement. “While we were in the writers’ room this year shaping our fifth season, we discovered that we were approaching the culmination of that story."

The series stars Bill Paxton as the head of a Mormon family, who struggles to maintain his business and family lives while hiding the fact that he is married to three women (Jeanne Tripplehorn, Chloë Sevigny and Ginnifer Goodwin).

The show's third season earned it an Emmy nomination for "Best Drama Series," but the most recent season was widely considered to be its weakest.

Critics griped that "Big Love" was taking too many sensational turns and even star Sevigny complained publicy that series was "awful."
