Rooney Mara to Join Daniel Craig in ‘Dragon Tattoo’

Director David Fincher to re-team with “Social Network” actress for Sony’s English-language adaptation

Rooney Mara will play computer hacker Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Sony announced via press release on Monday.

Daniel Craig stars as Mikael Blomkvist, while Robin Wright and Stellan Skarsgard co-star.

Mara next stars in Fincher's "The Social Network." She reportedly beat out Emily Browning, Sophie Lowe, Sarah Snook and French actress Lea Seydoux for the coveted role.

Steve Zaillian wrote the screenplay and Scott Rudin will produce with Cean Chaffin, Ole Sondberg and Søren Stærmose. Mikael Wallen and Anni Fernandez are executive producers.

"Dragon Tattoo" is the first book in Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy, which has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide thus far, including more than 10 million copies in the U.S. alone. "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" has out-sold any other e-book in that rapidly expanding market. A literary phenomenon, all three books currently sit atop the New York Times Bestseller lists.

"Tattoo" begins production this fall in Sweden, with a release date of Dec. 21, 2011.

Mara recently starred in New Line's remake of "A Nightmare on Elm St."

She is represented by WME.
