Why CBS Legal Drama ‘Bull’ Stretched Freddy Rodriguez as an Actor (Exclusive Video)

”I’ve never played a lawyer,“ Rodriguez tells TheWrap

“Bull” co-star Freddy Rodriguez has enjoyed a diverse career that has spanned over two decades, but his role as Benny Colón on the CBS series presented the industry veteran with a unique challenge.

“I’ve never played a lawyer before,” Rodriguez told TheWrap. “So when I was approached with the project I felt that I would be stretched as an actor.”

In this week’s episode, Bull (Michael Weatherly) and his team tackle jury bias against their client, a woman on trial for the murder of a star athlete she very publicly accused of assaulting her. The case brings Benny face-to-face with his former flame, Amanda (Tiffany Villarin), a prosecutor he hasn’t seen since their breakup.

In an exclusive clip of the episode obtained by TheWrap (above), Benny has to go on the offensive in court when Amanda stacks the courtroom with the athlete’s teammates, who are not exactly sympathetic to this week’s client.

Luckily, Rodriguez is more than up to the task of playing a lawyer, thanks in part to some coaching he got from Dr. Phil McGraw, the inspiration for the lead character in the series.

“What [Dr. Phil] did with us, we sat down and we talked, and he told story after story after story,” se said. “Him telling us these stories was like a window into this world, which really informed me on my character and what trial science is.”

“The most surprising to me thing was that [trial science] existed,” he continued. “I had no idea…It’s just this complicated, interesting matrix of people that operates together behind the scenes. It still blows my mind.”

“Bull” airs tonight at 9 p.m/8c on CBS.
