Christian Bale Chokes Up About Heath Ledger’s Death at MTV Movie Awards

The Batman star gets emotional remembering Ledger's performance as the Joker

Christian Bale provided the most emotional moment of Sunday's MTV Movie Awards while presenting footage from his upcoming superhero sequel "The Dark Knight Rises," as well as a look back at the previous films in the franchise.

The Welsh star, normally reserved in his public interviews and appearances, got choked up as he remembered his late co-star in "The Dark Knight," Heath Ledger.

"Wow, great to remember Heath at that moment," Bale said. "Wonderful to see Heath Ledger there."

Ledger won a posthumous Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 2009 for his role as the villainous Joker. He died of an accidental overdose of prescription drugs in 2008, before "The Dark Knight" hit theaters and shattered box office records. Ledger was 28 years old.

Bale was joined on stage by Gary Oldman and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, his co-stars in "The Dark Knight Rises." The actor struggled to compose himself for a moment before introducing director Christopher Nolan. 

The latest Batman film hits theaters on July 20 and is expected to be the last film in Nolan's popular series.
