On Thursday’s “The Late Show,” Stephen Colbert could hardly believe comments that Donald Trump made at a press conference where he appeared to basically cop to the thing he’s being investigated for in the House impeachment inquiry.

“The constitution gives the accused the right to remain silent. And clearly, Donald Trump has never read the constitution, because he will not shut the old hamburger hole. And everything he’s said in the last 48 hours just makes him guiltier,” Colbert joked.

Colbert then played a clip in which Trump, when asked what he hoped the president of Ukraine “would do about the Bidens,” said he hoped the Ukrainian government would start investigating Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.

“What are you doing? That is literally what they’re impeaching you for,” Colbert said incredulously. “Don’t say that out loud.”

But Colbert had a theory: “Trump knows if something’s bad, you don’t admit it in public. So, if he admits it in public, it must not be bad.”

But as far as Colbert is concerned, that’s bad logic. “It’s like a husband saying, ‘Honey, I know you think it’s wrong for me to have sex with our neighbor,’” Colbert said. “‘But if it were, why would I be doing it in the middle of your book club?’”
