Stephen Colbert on Tuesday took a look at acting Ukraine ambassador William B. Taylor’s testimony before Congress in the ongoing impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, and came away with an unsurprising conclusion about the President: “He’s just awful.”
Colbert started things off in his opening monologue with a pretend moment of contrition. “It is important, I believe, to admit when you’re wrong. We talk a lot about how Donald Trump is this corrupt guy who deserves to be dragged out of his office kicking and screaming,” he said. “But when I’m wrong… I’ll be sure to let you know. Not tonight. Because we’ve just learned tonight that he’s just awful.”
Colbert then dove into Taylor’s congressional testimony. Most of it remains undisclosed, but according to the Washington Post, Taylor said under oath that Trump ordered aid to Ukraine be cut off unless the country’s leader announced an investigation into Joe Biden’s son Hunter. Colbert also noted how records show Taylor objected to such a scheme in texts to EU ambassador Gordon Sondland, only to be told, “Call me.”
“We all imagined we know what happened on that subsequent call, but today, Taylor revealed exactly what’s on that call,” Colbert said. “And it’s exactly what you imagined happened on that call.”
“Do you understand what this means?” Colbert continued. “We finally have solid evidence of the crime that Trump and his chief of staff have already confessed to committing on camera.”
