Stephen Colbert took a look Tuesday night at Donald Trump’s refusal to cooperate with the ongoing impeachment inquiry, and jokingly compared Trump’s current behavior to the medical condition Trump says exempted him from the Vietnam war draft.

On Tuesday, Trump sent a letter to House Democrats announcing he will refuse to cooperate with the impeachment inquiry on the grounds that it is “unconstitutional.”

“Yes. Don’t get him wrong, Trump would like to help with the inquiry into his conversations with Ukraine,” Colbert said during his opening monologue on “The Late Show.” “But tragically, he has developed phone spurs.”

(Trump says he was medically exempt from the draft due to bone spurs in his feet.)

Later in the bit, Colbert took another look at the “absolutely bonkers” letter, noting that one of Trump’s complaints is that he has been “denied the right to cross-examine witnesses.”

“The witness is Trump’s incriminating phone transcript, which he released! If he wanted to, he could cross-examine himself,” Colbert continued, before switching to his Trump impression.

“Where was I on the night of the phone call,” Colbert’s Trump impression asked.

“I was on the phone,” Colbert’s Trump replied.

“Aha! Well, let me ask you this: If that’s the case, did you get any dirt on Joe Biden?”
