Comic-Con 2013: ‘Dexter’ Cast Talks Unexpected Character Shifts in Final Season

The Showtime series' cast and producers discuss its direction on Season 8

The cast and producers of Showtime's "Dexter" convened for the final time at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday.

Star and executive producer Michael C. Hall was joined by several castmates past and present. Additionally, executive producers John Goldwyn, Sara Colleton, Scott Buck and Manny Coto joined the panel to not only discuss the series but also thank the fans for their support over the show's eight seasons.

"I remember being here our first year when we were tucked away in a really little room somewhere," Julie Benz told the packed crowd. "The fact that you've grown to this size? It's tremendous."

Though shooting has ended on the series, Jennifer Carpenter said, "You think that's a wrap? This is a wrap, you and us here. This is a wrap."

Sitting next to each other were the show's two stars, Hall and Carpenter, who plays his adopted sister Debra. Last season, the character discovered her brother's murderous "dark secret" and has been falling apart from the revelation as Season 8 progresses.

"It makes my life look really good," she joked. "It's been scary and complicated, but I like to get scripts that I don't know what do with."

Later, she reiterated something she had said before about where she wants Deb's story to end. "I meant what I said, I want her to die," she said. "I just want her  to go to the bottom of the abyss where her secrets are."

Dexter, himself, is dealing with his own shifts in idealogy with the introduction of Dr. Evelyn Vogel (Charlotte Rampling), a woman who knew his father and claims to have teached him the very kill ethics that have become the serial killer's M.O.

"Dr. Vogel reframed Dexter's entire origin story," hall said. "Aside from the mother-son dynamics with Vogel, he's facing changing views on his father."

But, Hall says that we shouldn't believe that Vogel is the only one who can serve up the lessons. "It's a two-way street as to who's teaching who," he added.

Certainly, Dexter has his hands full. But, there's one more woman yet to turn his life around. "I'm coming back," Yvonne Strahovski said proudly.

Strahovski, who guest starred last season, plays Hannah McKay, a woman with her own murderous past who goes head-to-head with Dexter and his sister and loses.

"Hannah's return? We don't know if it's revenge or love," she teased.
