Court Approves Dish’s Blockbuster Purchase

Satellite company bought bankrupt rental chain for $320 million

Dish's $320 million purchase of Blockbuster received approval from a U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge on Thursday, a Blockbuster spokesperson confirmed to TheWrap.

The country's second largest satellite provider beat out Carl Icahn and a group of debt holders to snag the bankrupt rental chain in a public auction this week.

The company's landlords, business partners and creditors had objected that a sale would prevent them from collecting the millions of dollars owed to them — objections that  Judge Burton Lifland overruled.

Blockbuster filed for Chapter 11 protections last September after struggling under nearly $1 billion in debt. It still owes millions of dollars to studios such as Universal and Summit for discs shipped after its bankruptcy went into effect.
