Derek Hough to Sit Out Upcoming Season of ‘Dancing With the Stars’

The ballroom dancer will take on the role of Jack in Radio City Music Hall’s “New York Spring Spectacular” in March

When “Dancing With the Stars” returns this season for its 20th cycle, it’ll be missing one of its biggest names, Derek Hough.

Hough will be busy starring opposite Broadway veteran Laura Benanti (“Nashville”) in “New York Spring Spectacular,” a limited-run event at Radio City Music Hall in New York City starting Mar. 7.

“I am ecstatic that I’ll be able to extend my passion for performing to the Great Stage of Radio City Music Hall in ‘New York Spring Spectacular,’” said Hough. “Performing at Radio City Music Hall in a show that celebrates everything that is beloved about New York City is a dream.”

Hough will play Jack, who’s on a mission to help New York City tour guide Bernie keep his job, which is thrown into jeopardy when new boss Jenna (Benanti) reveals her plan to take the tour company virtual.

“I can’t wait to show fans this production … it’s going to be like nothing they’ve seen me in before,” Hough said.

Hough is by far the most well known dancer on the ABC ballroom competition. He’s won a record five mirrorball trophies.

Last season, Hough finished fourth with YouTube star Bethany Mota. He also appeared last fall on ABC’s “Nashville.”

“Dancing With the Stars” Season 20 will return on Monday, March 16 at 8 p.m.
