DiCaprio & Maguire Workshopping Luhrmann’s ‘Great Gatsby’

Actors read the roles of Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway with the director in New York

EXCLUSIVE

Best buddies Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire have been in New York, quietly workshopping scenes for Baz Luhrmann's planned adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel "The Great Gatsby," TheWrap has learned.

The acclaimed actors were in Manhattan last weekend to work with the "Moulin Rouge!" director.

DiCaprio and Maguire read the respective roles of Jay Gatsby and narrator Nick Carraway, characters who were played by Robert Redford and Sam Waterston in Jack Clayton's 1974 adaptation.

Additionally, TheWrap has confirmed that "The Town" star Rebecca Hall read the role of Daisy Buchanan.

Sony and Luhrmann share the rights to the project, which the director is writing with frequent collaborator Craig Pearce ("Moulin Rouge!").

Luhrmann is also producing with Catherine Martin and Red Wagon's Lucy Fisher and Douglas Wick.

It was previously reported that the "Australia" director hadn't decided whether to direct a new "Gatsby" adaptation or an original musical set up at Media Rights Capital, but if Luhrmann is workshopping the script with DiCaprio and Maguire, it's a pretty clear indication that he's made up his mind about his next project.

DiCaprio previously starred in Luhrmann's "Romeo and Juliet," and he acted alongside Maguire in both "This Boy's Life" and the little-seen indie "Don's Plum."
