Donald Trump was accused of being crude and vulgar on Tuesday after saying Hillary Clinton “got schlonged,” by Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential race.

However, the GOP frontrunner is now adamantly denying that he was being offensive and has stood by his statement in a defensive tweet.

“When I said that Hillary Clinton got schlonged by Obama, it meant got beaten badly. The media knows this. Often used word in politics!” he said later that evening.

The questionable remark was made at a rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Monday, during which Trump also slammed Clinton for taking a bathroom break during the Democratic debate on Saturday. “What happened to her? I’m watching the debate and she disappeared. Where did she go?” Trump asked.

Clinton’s camp was not pleased with either comment and issued a harsh tweet afterwards via her director of communications, Jennifer Palmieri, stating: “We are not responding to Trump but everyone who understands the humiliation this degrading language inflicts on all women should. #imwithher.”

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, “schlonged” is a vulgar slang term for penis, originating from Yiddish.

But according to Trump it simply means “beaten badly.”
