America just couldn't get enough of television's most popular rednecks this past year. When people weren't watching them, they were busy talking about them.
Facebook has released the top trending topics of 2012 and like it or not, "Honey Boo Boo" was the second most-mentioned television show on Mark Zuckerberg's social network, while A&E's "Duck Dynasty" was No. 1.

So what is it about these two reality shows that have captured the public's attention span? Both take place in the deep south, have dominated the ratings and, maybe most importantly, supply an endless amount of quotes to be ridiculed in status updates and parody videos circulating through social media.
Our most-talked-about entertainment isn't completely void of intelligence, though. "The Big Bang Theory," "Game of Thrones" and "Downton Abbey" rounded out the rest of the top five.
As for the top movie mentions, they aligned with the year's blockbusters — although box-office grosses didn't necessarily determine the order.
"The Hunger Games," for example, claimed the title of the most talked about movie of 2012 but earned less than half the record-breaking money that "The Avengers" did, which came in second place.

And despite "Twilight: Breaking Dawn – Part 2" being on track to becoming the most successful installment of the franchise worldwide, it landed fifth on the list behind not one, but two Channing Tatum movies.
Although "Magic Mike" and "The Vow" — third and fourth, respectively — didn't come close to grossing as much as the year's top blockbusters, both romantic movies kept people talking thanks to one secret weapon: People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive.
More top Facebook trends of 2012 include Barack Obama, Gangnam Style, "50 Shades of Grey," Fun.'s hit single "We Are Young" and unfortunately, the expression "YOLO" (You Only Live Once).
Adding a little hope for humanity was the popularity of KONY — the leader of a Ugandan guerilla group responsible for wreaking havoc in Africa — in the memes category. Whether people were actually talking about bringing the war criminal to justice or mocking the movement remains in question.
