Emmys Early Ratings Sink 20 Percent From Last Year

Comparable 2014 awards show took place on a Monday in August

The 67th Emmy Awards crashed fairly hard in overnight ratings, down 20 percent from 2014.

In comparison, last year’s broadcast took place on an August NBC Monday, and not a September Fox Sunday. As such, the best-of-TV event had a solid “Sunday Night Football” game to contend with over on NBC this year, which helps explain the drop.

Sunday night’s awards show landed an 8.7 rating/14 share versus a 10.9/18 last year on Aug. 25.

On NBC, the Seattle Seahawks-Green Bay Packers game posted 16.3/27 overnight — nearly doubling the very preliminary Emmys figures. The football game marked NBC’s second-best Week 2 totals ever — behind a 16.5/27, New York Giants-Dallas Cowboys contest from 2009 — and was up 16 percent from the same slot in 2014 (Chicago-San Francisco’s 14.0/23).

Fast national numbers should be out around 11 a.m. ET.
