Facebook Members Memorialize ‘Restrepo’ Director

Social network sites play big role in spreading news and condolences after Tim Hetherington dies in Libya

Social network sites such as Facebook and Twitter played a key role in sifting through the often contradictory accounts about the death of "Restrepo" director Tim Hetherington earlier this week.

News first broke on Facebook  that Hetherington had been killed in Libya with a message from his friend, photographer Andre Liohn. Further updates came via the Twitter feed of Vanity Fair, where the documentarian was a contributor.

Now Wired reports, the director and photographer's Facebook page also became an impromptu memorial following the news.

Admirers of the fallen filmmaker have flooded the site with words of condolence and gratitude. Friends and colleagues are sharing photos of Hetherington at work.

Likewise, under hashtags such as #TimHetherington, Twitter users continue to share their grief over the journalist's passing, as well as post links to the final images captured by Chris Hondros, Hetherington's friend and fellow photographer who died alongside him in Libya.
