FCC Chairman Makes Two Key Appointments

Genachowski’s senior staff begins to take shape with a general counsel and a managing director.

Two weeks after being confirmed as Chairman of the Federal Comunications Commission, Julius Genachowski made two major appointments to his senior staff. Indicating that he would make many announcements in the coming weeks regarding personnel, Genachowski chose Steve VanRoekel to become the commission’s managing director and Austin Schlick as general counsel.

Van Roekel was most recently an executive at Microsoft in the Windows Serve and Tools division. He worked at the company for 15 years, spending many of those years dealing directly with Bill Gates as an assistant and adviser.

Schlick returns to the FCC after serving uin another governmental office. Once the deputy general counsel for litigation and acting general counsel at the commission, Shlick has worked most recently as the Chief of the Civil Division in the Maryland Attorney General’s office.
