‘Godzilla’ Thunders to No. 1 Openings in 7 Foreign Markets

Legendary-Warners Bros. monster movie opens in the U.S. and 64 international territories this weekend

“Godzilla” is off and stomping at the international box office, opening at No. 1 in all seven foreign markets in which it debuted Wednesday.

The monster saga from Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. opens in more than 3,800 theaters Friday in the U.S. and Canada, and many theaters will be offering early screenings at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The big lizard brought in $1.6 million in France, Warner Bros. said Thursday, and topped the market in Sweden, Belgium, Switzerland, Norway, Finland and Indonesia, where it posted that country’s biggest single day of the year.

“Godzilla” opens Thursday in Germany, Italy, Russia, Brazil and Mexico, and will be on more than 15,500 screens in 64 foreign countries this weekend‎.

Early Thursday estimates from Rentrak showed “Godzilla” dominating the Aussie box office with an estimated $1.2 million from 248 sites, a 66 percent share of the top five films and over twice that of runner-up “Neighbors.”
