Golden Globes host Ricky Gervais came in hot with his opening monologue on Sunday, getting himself bleeped two separate times within the first quarter of an hour, triggering gasps from around the room.
The first explicit joke came at the expense of “Cats” stars James Corden and Dame Judi Dench.
“The world got to see James Corden as a fat pussy. He was also in the movie ‘Cats’ but no one saw that,” he said. “And the reviews, shocking. I read one that said, ‘This is the worst thing to happen to cats since dogs.'”
“Dame Judi Dench defended the film, saying it was the role she was born to play. Because she — I can’t do this next joke. Because she loves nothing better than plunking herself down on the carpet, lifting her leg, and licking her m-nge,” he continued to the shock of the people in the Beverly Hilton ballroom.
Between sips of beer, the comedian next made a recommendation to everyone who would give an acceptance speech that night.
“Accept your award, thank your agent and your God and f— off. Right?” Gervais quipped.
The first winner of the evening, Ramy Youssef of Hulu’s “Ramy,” took home Best Actor in a TV musical or comedy series.
The Egyptian actor riffed on Gervais’ joke, saying he’d “like to thank his God. Allahu Akbar.”
