Golden Globes Red Carpet Hosts Cut Back on Fashion Questions for Actresses

E!’s Ryan Seacrest and Giuliana Rancic ask for fashion details last, if at all

This year’s Golden Globes pre-show proved that red carpet hosts might be ready to #AskHerMore.

A year after stars like Reese Witherspoon implored entertainment journalists to ask female talent about topics beyond their gowns and jewels, pre-shows like E!’s “Live From The Red Carpet” seemed to scale back on the superficial on Sunday.

Hosts Ryan Seacrest and Giuliana Rancic saved the standard “What are you wearing?” ask for the end of interviews as opposed to the top, if they asked at all.

Gina Rodriguez talked at length about her date, father Genaro, before she squeezed in a shoutout to her Zac Posen gown. Olivia Wilde discussed the date night she was enjoying with partner Jason Sudeikis over her Michael Kors creation.

Jennifer Lawrence spoke exclusively about the women who inspired her entrepreneur character in “Joy.” Zendaya talked about being a role model for young girls with no mention of her tiered red pattern gown. Laverne Cox spent so much time discussing the unprecedented diversity of “Orange Is the New Black” that she didn’t even name-drop her designer.

When asked if the line of questioning was intentional on the part of Seacrest and Rancic, an E! spokesperson did not immediately respond to TheWrap.

The tonal change in red carpet discourse also had some help form Amy Poehler‘s “Smart Girls” organization, which asked celebs like Witherspoon, Jamie Foxx, Shonda Rhimes and actress Rowan Blanchard to contribute more thoughtful questions for the media.
