‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ First Trailer Promises Epic Alien Showdown (Video)

Sequel to 1996 action blockbuster premieres June 24 for Fox

Fox released the first trailer for “Independence Day: Resurgence” on Sunday.

The film is set decades after the events of “Independence Day.” Humans have adapted alien technology to create a new global defense system in the event that the invaders should return. But when they do return, nothing can prepare humanity for the fight that will ensure.

Bill Pullman, Jeff Goldblum, Vivica A. Fox, and Judd Hirsch will all reprise their roles from the original film. Liam Hemsworth, Maika Monroe, and Joey King will also star.

Roland Emmerich is returning to direct the film, with Carter Blanchard, Nicholas Wright, and James A. Woods writing the screenplay. Emmerich is also producing the film along with Dean Devlin and Harold Kloser. Ute Emmerich and Carsten H.W. Lorenz are executive producing.

The original “Independence Day” was a massive success, grossing over $817 million worldwide when it was released in 1996. The film also helped launch the film career of Will Smith, who will not be returning for the sequel.

“Independence Day: Resurgence” opens in theaters June 24, 2016.
