‘It Follows’ Star Maika Monroe Joins Liam Hemsworth in ‘Independence Day 2’

Director Roland Emmerich made the announcement on Twitter on Monday

Maika Monroe, who starred in the acclaimed genre films “It Follows” and “The Guest,” has been cast as the female lead of “Independence Day 2,” it was announced Monday by director Roland Emmerich.

New cast members include Liam Hemsworth, Jessie Usher, Travis Tope, Joey King and Charlotte Gainsbourg, while returning cast members from the beloved original include Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Vivica A. Fox and Judd Hirsch. Will Smith is not expected to return for the long-gestating sequel.

While Monroe’s role was not revealed as part of the announcement, she’ll likely be playing Pullman’s daughter and Hemsworth’s love interest.

Dean Devlin wrote the first draft of the film with Emmerich, while James A. Woods and Nicolas Wright wrote the most recent draft. James Vanderbilt also had a hand in writing the movie, which Emmerich and Devlin are producing with Harald Kloser.

Monroe next stars alongside Chloe Moretz in Sony’s “The 5th Wave.” She’s also attached to star in Relativity’s “Tribes of Palos Verdes” with Jennifer Garner. She’s represented by WME, Luber Roklin Entertainment and attorney Fred Toczek.
