Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto, Matt Bomer and Andrew Rannells will lead a star-studded Broadway revival of Mart Crowley’s groundbreaking play “The Boys in the Band” this spring, producers Ryan Murphy and David Stone announced Wednesday.

Two-time Tony winner Joe Mantello will direct the 50th anniversary production, which will have a limited run at the Booth Theatre from April 30 to August 12, 2018.

Robin de Jesús, Brian Hutchison, Michael Benjamin Washington and Tuc Watkins will co-star in the comic drama, which follows a group of gay men who gather in a New York apartment for a friend’s birthday party.

The gathering slowly exposes the fault lines beneath the men’s friendships and the self-inflicted heartache that threatens their solidarity.

The original Off Broadway production opened in April 1968 and went on to run for more than 1,000 performances. The entire original company traveled with the show to London and also appeared in William Friedkin’s landmark 1970 film adaptation.

Murphy, a TV impresario who had a hand in producing last year’s Tony-winning revival of “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” starring Jessica Lange, underscored the historic nature of Crowley’s play.

“In 1968, Mart Crowley made theatrical history by giving voice to gay men onstage, in this uncompromising, blisteringly honest, and wickedly funny play,” he said in a statement. “The play was groundbreaking in its exploration of how gay men treated each other and how they were made to feel about themselves. And while some attitudes have thankfully shifted, it’s important to be reminded of what we have overcome and how much further we still have to go.”

Stone added, “Everything has changed. And nothing has changed.”
