Joel Edgerton, Ruth Negga Fight Law With Love in First ‘Loving’ Trailer (Video)

Drama based on true story of interracial couple hits theaters on Nov. 4

In the first trailer for “Loving,” co-stars Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga take their love for each other all the way to the Supreme Court.

The pair plays real-life couple Richard and Mildred Loving, an interracial couple from Virginia who married in the 1950s and then spent years fighting against laws that declared their marriage illegal. Their marriage became the basis of the 1967 Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia.

The film, from writer and director Jeff Nichols, debuted at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival and received critical praise, with some naming it a potential Oscar contender.

TheWrap’s Ben Croll wrote in his review:

The laconic Nichols is not one for swelling strings or sweeping melodrama, and so he lets the film’s big emotional beats play out on [Negga’s] face. The net effect is that when thinking of the film’s poignancy, one thinks about Negga. That’s going to be an ace in her sleeve for the rest of the year.

The Focus Features release also stars Martin Csokas, Michael Shannon, Bill Camp, Nick Kroll and Terri Abney.

Focus paid a reported $9 million for North American and some international rights to the movie at the Berlin Film Festival in February.

“Loving” will debut in select cities on Nov. 4 before expanding nationwide.
