Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Directorial Debut ‘Don Jon’ Moves Up

Relativity Media will release the film on Sept. 27 and Luc Besson's "The Family" on Sept. 13

Relativity Media has moved up the release of Joseph Gordon-Levitt's directorial debut "Don Jon" from Oct. 18 to Sept. 27, the filmmaker announced on Twitter on Thursday.

The company also moved up the release of Luc Besson's "The Family" from Sept. 20 to Sept. 13. The film stars Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer and Tommy Lee Jones.

"Don Jon" will now open against Sony Animation's "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2," 20th Century Fox's gambling thriller "Runner Runner" starring Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake and Fox Searchlight's romantic comedy "Baggage Claim," all of which are opening in wide release. Movies scheduled for limited release are Picturehouse's IMAX movie "Metallica Through the Never" and LD Entertainment's "Therese."

"Don Jon" stars Gordon-Levitt as the title character, as well as Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore and Tony Danza.

Story follows a porn-obsessed New Jersey bartender whose addiction stands in the way of having a meaningful relationship with a woman. Johansson plays his love interest, who has unrealistic expectations thanks to the romantic comedies she grew up watching. Moore co-stars as the protagonist's classmate who teaches him about the importance of intimacy.

Gordon-Levitt’s longtime collaborator Ram Bergman (“Looper”) produced with the director's HitRecord Films banner, and the film was exec produced by Nicolas Chartier of Voltage Pictures, which handled international sales.

Relativity acquired "Don Jon" at Sundance in a late-night deal that called for $4 million upfront and a wide release with a P&A spend in the $25 million range.
