“Jurassic World,” Universal’s sequel to Steven Spielberg‘s 1993 rampaging reptiles sci-fi classic, is off to an outstanding start at the international box office.

It opened in 6,824 theaters in China, France and six smaller territories on Wednesday, and grossed $21 million, and a total of $24.5 million when previews in 12 additional markets were added in.

The PG-13-rated “Jurassic World” opens Friday in North America in 4,273 theaters, and will be Universal’s widest domestic and global day-and-date release ever. It rolls out in 58 additional international territories on Thursday and Friday.

The sequel, directed by Colin Trevorrow and starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, opened at No. 1 in China $17.24 million, the sixth-biggest debut for a foreign film ever there.

It was a 2013 3D re-release in China that helped boost “Jurassic Park,” the film upon which the sequel is based, over the $1 billion mark at the global box office. IMAX theaters were a driving force in that run and they will be in this one, too. On Wednesday, the giant screens brought in $2.5 million, a whopping 15 percent of the gross.

“Jurassic World,” on which Spielberg is an executive producer, also opened at No. 1  in Belgium, Egypt, France, Indonesia, Philippines, French Switzerland and Trinidad.
