Katy Perry is taking some heat on social media for posting a picture of a Hindu goddess to her Instagram profile with the caption “current mood.”

“This is a shameful and offensive act. You can’t compare yourself with The Great Goddess KALI MAA,” one user responded.

“u r totally stupid n shameless…….,” another wrote, while one user said, “@katyperry not really offended but …This is not a meme ..”

However, many rushed to the singer’s defense, saying, “She is feeling empowered like Goddess Kali — that’s all she meant!! Don’t always take things in a negative way!”

Another wrote, “I don’t what’s wrong in this post because its just a feeling.”

In the past, the 32-year-old has said that although she was raised in a conservative Christian household and both her parents were pastors, she did not identify with any religion.

“I don’t believe in a heaven or a hell or an old man sitting on a throne. I believe in a higher power bigger than me because that keeps me accountable. Accountability is rare to find, especially with people like myself, because nobody wants to tell you something you don’t want to hear,” she told Marie Claire in 2013. “I actually don’t trust people who start to turn on me because they get scared of telling me the truth. I’m not Buddhist, I’m not Hindu, I’m not Christian, but I still feel like I have a deep connection with God. I pray all the time–for self-control, for humility. There’s a lot of gratitude in it. Just saying ‘thank you’ sometimes is better than asking for things.”

However, Perry married Russell Brand in 2010 in a private Hindu wedding, according to the Telegraph. The couple later divorced in 2012.

A representative for Perry has not yet responded to TheWrap’s request for comment.
