Kellan Lutz Film ‘Hercules: The Legend Begins’ Acquired by Summit

Studio has long relationship with the “Twilight” star

Summit Entertainment is back in the Kellan Lutz business now that it has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Millennium Films’ “Hercules: The Legend Begins.”

The “Twilight” star headlines the movie, which is directed by Renny Harlin of “Die Hard 2” and “Cliffhanger” fame. It’s one of two projects based on the mythological hero currently making their way to the screen — the other, “Hercules,” stars Dwayne Johnson and is directed by Brett Ratner.

Summit will release Team Lutz’s edition in 3D and good old two dimensions nationwide on Feb. 7, 2014.

Lutz stars as the son of Zeus in the film, which finds him sold into slavery, and fighting to return to his true love, the Princess of Crete (played by Gaia Weiss).

In addition to appearing in all five “Twilight” movies for Summit, Lutz will next appear in “The Expendables 3” for Summit’s parent company, Lionsgate.

The deal was negotiated on behalf of Lionsgate and Summit by Jason Constantine, Lionsgate’s president of acquisitions and co-productions; Eda Kowan, Lionsgate’s  senior vice president of acquisitions; Wendy Jaffe, Lionsgate’s executive vice president of business & legal affairs for acquisitions & co-productions, and on behalf of Millennium by its chairman Avi Lerner and president Mark Gill.
