The field for the 64th annual Tony Awards is set.
“Fela!” — the Broadway musical about late Afrobeat star Fela Kuti, produced by Jay-Z and Jada Pinkett-Smith — and "La Cage aux Folles" each received 11 nominations, the most of any production.
Denzel Washington, Jude Law, Scarlett Johansson, Laura Linney, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Kelsey Grammer were among stars receiving nominations.
Jeff Daniels and "Glee" star Lea Michele (of the Tony Award-winning musical "Spring Awakening") announced the nominees in New York Tuesday.
Sarah Ruhl’s "In the Next Room (or the Vibrator Play)," Geoffrey Nauffts’ "Next Fall," John Logan’s "Red" and Donald Margulies’ "Time Stands Still" are up for best play.
In the best musical category, nominees went to "Fela!" Green Day’s "American Idiot," "Memphis" and "Million Dollar Quartet."
Recipients of the special Tony Award for lifetime achievement are prolific playwright Alan Ayckbourn and actress Marian Seldes. David Hyde Pierce will receive the second Isabelle Stevenson Award, presented for humanitarian efforts; he is being recognized for his work in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease.
The Tony Honors for Excellence in the Theater go to the Alliance of Resident Theaters/New York, which assists its nearly 300 member theaters in managing their companies effectively; veteran theatrical fight director B.H. Barry; and Tom Viola, executive director of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, the nation’s leading industry-based not-for-profit AIDS fundraising and grant-making organization.
CBS will broadcast the ceremony live from Radio City Music Hall on Sunday, June 13 (tape-delayed for the West Coast).
