‘The Chi’ Creator Lena Waithe to Get ‘Trailblazer’ Award at 2018 ‘MTV Movie & TV Awards’

“The Chi” creator Lena Waithe will receive the Trailblazer Award at June’s 2018 “MTV Movie & TV Awards.” The trophy “recognizes game-changing creators with fresh and fearless voices in entertainment,” per MTV.

The “Master of None” scribe made history as the first woman of color to win an Emmy Award for “Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series.” Waithe recently starred in Steven Spielberg’s “Ready Player One,” and is also writing and producing “Twenties,” a pilot that was recently picked up by TBS and loosely based on her turbulent twenties living in Los Angeles.

“Lena is shaking up Hollywood and breaking cultural boundaries through her innovative and authentic storytelling,” said Amy Doyle, general manager MTV, VH1 and Logo. “Her unwavering passion for equality and inclusion make her the perfect recipient for this year’s Trailblazer Award.”

Joel Gallen/Tenth Planet Productions serves as Executive Producer of the “MTV Movie & TV Awards” with MTV’s Amy Doyle, Garrett English and Wendy Plaut.  Rick Austin also serves as Executive Producer. Vanessa Whitewolf serves as co-executive Producer. Melanie Block is executive in charge of production. Amani Duncan is executive in charge of music.

The 2018 “MTV Movie & TV Awards” will air on Monday, June 18 at 9/8c from the Barker Hangar in Los Angeles.
