First ‘Macbeth’ Trailer: Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard Make Shakespeare Look Cool (Video)

Weinstein Company is releasing Hollywood’s latest adaptation of the playwright’s celebrated material on Dec. 4

Shakespeare was pretty boring in high school English class, but the first trailer for The Weinstein Company’s “Macbeth” starring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard makes this classic piece of literature look pretty cool.

The film, as anyone familiar with the source material knows, follows a Scottish army general’s rise to the throne after receiving a prophecy from a trio of witches predicting he’ll be king one day. Well, one day isn’t fast enough for Macbeth (Fassbender) and his wife (Cotillard), who encourages him to just murder the sitting king to speed up the process.

Between what appears to be at least one epic battle sequence, an emotionally complex performance from Fassbender and Cotillard, and director Justin Kurzel‘s gritty realism, any moviegoers who found Shakespeare’s tragedy a struggle to read in their teen years may very well buy a ticket anyway.

“Macbeth,” written by Jacob Koskoff and Todd Louiso and based on Shakespeare’s 17th century play, hits theaters on Dec. 4.

Video game fans should consider this a warm-up for their beloved “Assassin’s Creed” adaptation, which is not only being directed by Kurzel, it stars Fassbender and Cotillard, as well.
