“Grey’s Anatomy” alum Sara Ramirez is joining the cast of “Madam Secretary,” CBS announced Tuesday.

Ramirez will play legendary D.C. political strategist Kat Sandoval who abruptly left politics until Elizabeth (Téa Leoni) coaxes her back into the State Department.

Ramirez played Doctor Callie Torres for 10 years, and exited the Shondaland staple “Grey’s Anatomy” in 2016. She had been a major character on the show since Season 2.

The introduction of a new political player to the Secretary of State’s team comes just after a shocking exit by Bebe Neuwirth, who played Nadine Tolliver on the show. Nadine left her position at the State Department in Sunday night’s episode, leading fans wondering what Elizabeth’s team will do without her. The series regular had been in more than 70 episodes.

“We’re very excited that Sara is joining the cast,” said series creator and executive producer Barbara Hall. “She brings a fresh perspective and a fun, energetic quality to the State Department staff.”

You can watch “Madam Secretary” Sundays on CBS.
