IMAX Corporation promoted Mark Welton to president of IMAX Theaters on Thursday.

Welton most recently served as the company’s executive vice president of corporate and digital development and theatre operations.
In his new role, Welton will direct IMAX’s theater sales and growing global operation.
IMAX has been building its international presence steadily, forging recent partnerships with foreign exhibitors in such far-flung countries as China, Russia and India.
To that end, the company announced last month that it had appointed former Paramount Pictures International executive Andrew Cripps as president of its Europe, Middle East and Africa operations.

Welton will report directly to IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond.
Welton joined IMAX in 1997 as director of business affairs and has held several senior roles within the company since that time. Welton is credited with helping the company sign partnerships with its two largest North American exhibitors – AMC and Regal Cinemas.
“Mark has a proven track record of achievement within IMAX,” Gelfond said in a statement. “His in-depth knowledge of our business, coupled with his operational and industry expertise, has helped us expand our business in key markets."
Prior to joining the Company, Welton was an associate lawyer at the law firm Stikeman, Elliot and was a chartered accountant with Ernst & Young.
