Martha Plimpton on Playing the Mom of a Gay Teen in ‘The Real O’Neals’ (Video)

“We’re telling a story that hasn’t quite been done before,” ABC actress tells Stuart Brazell during new episode of TheWrap’s “Drinking With the Stars”

Martha Plimpton plays the matriarch of ABC’s newest family sitcom, and she believes “The Real O’Neals” fits right in on the network of “Modern Family” and “Fresh Off the Boat.”

“We’re telling a story that hasn’t quite been done before,” she told TheWrap’s Stuart Brazell during a new episode of “Drinking With the Stars.” “It’s the coming of age of a young gay man. And all the very normal, average things that happen.”

“The Real O’Neals” follows a family whose lives take an unexpected turn when surprising truths are revealed, including 14-year-old Kenny (Noah Galvin) coming out as gay.

“We also know that a lot of gay kids aren’t that lucky,” Plimpton added. “A lot of gay kids get kicked out of their families. I think this is a wonderful way, through humor and these empathetic characters, to express those feelings that families have and open up those doors to allow them to talk about it.”

“The Real O’Neals” airs Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
