Mediaite managing editor Colby Hall is taking a leave from the company and will become an editor at large, TheWrap has learned.

Hall, who co-founded Mediaite with Dan Abrams back in 2009, told TheWrap he would be “stepping back” from the day-to-day management of the media website to pursue consulting work at a digital video startup. He declined to name the new company or offer any broader specifics.

“I’m taking a few months stepping back from day to day editorial operations at Mediaite to work on a project of which I am very excited (outside of the world of political media),” Hall said in a statement.

“The existing internal team will run day to day operations,” Abrams said in his own statement, referring to Morning Editor Aidan McLaughlin and Sports Editor Joe DePaolo. “The door remains open for Colby to return in a full time capacity.”

(Full disclosure: The author of this piece was previously employed as a Senior Editor at Mediate and had a working relationship with Hall.)

Hall had served as the site’s managing editor from 2009 to 2012, then returned last March after the departure of managing editor Jon Nicosia for the Independent Journal Review.

In his statement, Abrams praised Hall for his work in the last 10 months. “In that time, he has helped build out one of the strongest teams the site has ever seen,” Abrams said. “He has been offered a unique short term opportunity outside the media content space but will continue to be involved with the site.”

Hall, an Emmy-nominated producer, previously worked as a digital platform producer for iHeartRadio.
