Michelle Monaghan to Play Mark Wahlberg’s Wife in ‘Patriots Day’

Peter Berg will direct the Boston Marathon bombing drama for CBS Films and Lionsgate

One day before her new series “The Path” debuts on Hulu, Michelle Monaghan has signed on to play Mark Wahlberg’s wife in Peter Berg‘s Boston Marathon bombing drama “Patriots Day,” it was announced Tuesday by CBS Films and Lionsgate.

The supporting cast includes Oscar winner J.K. Simmons and Golden Globe winner John Goodman, as well as Jimmy O. Yang, James Colby and “The Sopranos” actor Vincent Curatola.

Wahlberg is producing the film with Scott Stuber, Hutch Parker, Dylan Clark, Stephen Levinson, Dorothy Aufiero and Michael Radutzky. CBS Films and Lionsgate are co-financing the movie, with the former handling production and marketing and the latter handling distribution.

“Patriots Day” chronicles the events surrounding the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombing. Monaghan will play Carol Saunders, the wife of Sgt. Tommy Saunders (Wahlberg), both of whom are composite characters. The film will open in Boston, New York and Los Angeles on Dec. 21.

“In the aftermath of the attack heroes appeared from every corner of Boston. Michelle is a remarkable actress who knows the people of this city and understands their courage and strength,” said Berg.

Monaghan recently starred in “Pixels” and will soon be seen opposite Jamie Foxx in the thriller “Sleepless Night.” The Golden Globe-nominated actress is represented by ICM Partners, Circle of Confusion and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern.
