Miley Cyrus is sliding away from speculation that her marriage to Liam Hemsworth ended because of cheating.
“I can admit to a lot of things but I refuse to admit that my marriage ended because of cheating,” Cyrus said in a Twitter thread Thursday.
Cyrus and Hemsworth confirmed their split on August 12 after only eight months of marriage, but a full decade of dating. The pair met as co-stars on the set of the Nicholas Sparks-novel-based film “The Last Song” in 2009. Since then, their on-again, off-again relationship has been some of the juiciest, most sought-after tabloid fodder — but now, it seems to have come to an official end. Hemsworth reportedly filed for divorce Wednesday, according to TMZ.
Rumors have swirled, but based on what the pair have said publicly, the split seems to be amicable — Hemsworth said in an Instagram post on Aug. 12 that he wishes Cyrus “nothing but health and happiness going forward.”
Cyrus was on the same page Thursday.
“Liam and I have been together for a decade. I’ve said it before & it remains true, I love Liam and always will,” she said in a tweet.
“I can accept that the life I’ve chosen means I must live completely open and transparent with my fans who I love, and the public, 100% of the time. What I cannot accept is being told I’m lying to cover up a crime I haven’t committed. I have nothing to hide,” Cyrus continued.
The “Slide Away” singer went on to acknowledge the reputation for partying she acquired in her youth after ending her child-star status as “Hannah Montana” and embarking on a future of superstardom as an adult pop icon.
“It is no secret that I was into partying in my teens and early 20’s. I have not only smoked, but advocated for weed, I’ve experimented with drugs, my biggest song to date is about dancing on molly and snorting lines in the bathroom,” she said.
And while she admits that “I f—ed up and cheated in relationships when I was young,” she insists that her marriage to Hemsworth ended for an entirely different reason.
“I had to make a healthy decision for myself to leave a previous life behind. I am the healthiest and happiest I have been in a long time. You can say I am a twerking, pot smoking , foul mouthed hillbilly but I am not a liar,” she said. “I am proud to say, I am simply in a different place from where I was when I was a younger.”
