MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” co-host Joe Scarborough had to reassure a guest that “Hitler is not coming back” during a heated exchange about President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday.
Author Anand Giridharadas expressed concern over Trump making good on his divisive campaign promises. Scarborough promised checks and balances would prevent extreme policy decisions.
“In moments of hysteria, fear, conflict, there have been exceptions. Internment was an exception,” Giridharadas said before explaining that a terror attack that “fills people with fear” would “give the president license to do things” that aren’t typically legal.
Giridharadas, who frequently writes about India and its people, said that his family discussed being fearful of the nation over Thanksgiving dinner.
“We now have a president-elect who is actively calling into question the right of people who are already American to remain American,” Giridharadas said, referring to Trump’s Tuesday morning tweet that people should lose citizenship for burning the America flag.
“You’re not being rational now,” Scarborough said. “I have confidence in the Supreme Court of the United States … Hitler is not coming back.”
