“Mr. Robot” star Christian Slater has been nominated for a Golden Globe for the second straight year, but the actor is more concerned with crossing paths with the other actors in his category.
“There’s John Travolta, who I’ve worked with before and again grew up with,” Slater told TheWrap on Monday. “I can’t wait to see him at the ceremony and I’ll just give him a big hug.” Travolta, who co-starred with Slater in the action film “Broken Arrow,” is nominated for his role in the FX limited series “The People v. O.J. Simpson”
Slater also revealed his immediate reaction to being nominated again, and why he thinks the USA Network drama has been so successful after just two seasons.
What was your immediate reaction upon learning you had been nominated?
Shock, surprise, gratitude, and overwhelming joy.
Does it mean more the second time around? Yeah, it’s fantastic. Again, it was unexpected. I thought it would have been greedy to expect that it would happen. I’m thrilled to be included in this category with the other wonderful people: John Travolta, John Lithgow, Hugh Laurie, and Sterling K. Brown. They’re phenomenal and just brilliant. I love playing this character and I’m chomping at the bit to get back to work on April 10.
Who do you think is the biggest competition in your category? It’s so crazy that competition is even a thing in this business. For me, it’s a chance to cross paths with people that I grew up with and people that I’ve worked with. John Lithgow, he’s one of the reasons I am an actor. The first film I saw him in was “World According to Garp” and I’ll never forget his performance in it.
What is it about “Mr. Robot” that has resonated so strongly with viewers? I think the word “hacking” is something that is incredibly relevant in our world today. So I have to take my hat off to [creator] Sam Esmail’s phenomenal insight to be able to see that technology would play such an incredible role in our lives as it does today. I think the show is just pushing that button and on the one hand it’s great for the show but on the other it’s scary to live in a world where hacking is such a real thing.
What’s another nominated show or film that you enjoyed? I’m a huge “Game of Thrones” fan. “Moonlight” is wonderful.
But gosh, it’s been hard to see everything. I’m going to spend the holidays catching up on everything and getting to the bottom of what the best things are.
