Neill Blomkamp Casts ‘District 9’ Star Sharlto Copley in ‘Elysium’

Set in the distant future on another planet, the film will traffic in many sociopolitical ideas

"District 9" star Sharlto Copley will re-team with director Neill Blomkamp for his sophomore sci-fi feature "Elysium," reports Deadline.

Set in the distant future on another planet, "Elysium" takes a similar approach to storytelling as "District 9," as the film described as having many sociopolitical ideas wrapped inside a traditional Hollywood action movie.

Blomkamp and Media Rights Capital are shopping the project all over town as they search for a distributor. The presentation reportedly includes a graphic novel, and Blomkamp is said to be meeting with talent agents while he finalizes the budget.

MRC has a distribution deal with Universal, but the studio hasn't yet committed to releasing "Elysium," which has no relation to "District 9," the modestly-budgeted blockbuster that earned over $211 million worldwide en route to a Best Picture nomination despite being made outside of the studio system.

Copley has been in high demand since he starred in "District 9," having gone on to star as Murdock in Joe Carnahan's "The A-Team." The South African actor was also cast in DreamWorks' "I Am Number Four" before he dropped out and was replaced by Timothy Olyphant.

Copley is represented by WME.
