New ‘Hot Tub Time Machine 2’ Ad Tackles Deflated Balls

The spot takes a swipe at the New England Patriots’ Deflategate scandal

A new ad for the comedy sequel “Hot Tub Time Machine 2” uses some careful editing to tie itself into the Deflategate scandal that is currently plaguing the NFL’s New England Patriots.

Pats quarterback Tom Brady is accused of using balls that were not inflated properly during the team’s recent victory over the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Championship game. In the ad, Rob Corddry‘s character, Lou, emerges from the titular time machine dressed in Revolutionary War-era garb and Craig Robinson‘s character refers to him as “Patriot Lou.”

The narrator then reminds the audience that “If you’re going to take on the Patriots, make sure their balls are fully inflated.” We then cut to a scene from the film at a futuristic massage parlor that features one of the characters … well, just watch the video.

The film reunites Corddry, Robinson, and Clark Duke from the original film, with the addition of Adam Scott and Gillian Jacobs. The film opens in theaters on Feb. 20.
