Beau Flynn's new production company has signed a two-year, first-look deal at New Line Cinema, the studio announced on Monday.
Flynn, who recently formed Flynn Picture Company, plans to make R-rated comedies, big-budget spectacles, thrillers and what he terms "elevated genre films."
"Television is doing such good work, the writing is so fresh, and there is A-plus talent in television, so to make sure an audience gets into the theaters you have to show them something they can't get on TV," Flynn told TheWrap.
For the past decade, Flynn ran Contrafilm with Tripp Vinson. The company was based at New Line, but the partners split up recently to venture off on their own. Over their decade in business together, Flynn and Vinson produced hits such as "The Rite" (2011), "Journey to the Center of the Earth" (2008) and "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" (2005).
Flynn told TheWrap that he's comfortable at the studio and hopes to make at least one to two films a year there. "I'd love to make as much of New Line's slate as possible," Flynn said.
Flynn said he felt that New Line would give him the freedom to dabble in many different kinds of genres and mentioned that he was particularly impressed with its handling of this summer's "Horrible Bosses," even though the black comedy hit didn't originate with Flynn's production house.
Among the projects Flynn has lined up at New Line are a remake of the Spanish-language film "The Orphanage" with Guillermo del Toro and Tripp Vinson also producing; the thriller "Solace" again with Vinson; and "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" starring Dwayne Johnson and Josh Hutcherson, another carryover from his association with Vinson.
At other studios, Flynn is producing Paramount's Jeremy Renner fantasy film "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters" with the production company Gary Sanchez (Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Kevin Messick). He's also producing the Fox/New Regency comedy "What's Your Number," which stars Anna Faris and Chris Evans and is due out on Sept. 30.
