An attack on the campus of Ohio State University played out in real time on social media Monday morning while confusion and chaos made it hard to determine what was actually going on.

Here is what we know so far:

This wasn’t a shooting

The attack was initially called a “shooting,” but reports indicate the suspect did not shoot anyone. He is now believed to have initially struck people with a car before stabbing victims with a butcher knife.

Confusion over details started when Ohio State officials warned students in a series of tweets about the situation, one of which said, “Buckeye Alert: Active Shooter on campus. Run Hide Fight. Watts Hall. 19th and College.”

The suspect has been partially ID’d

The attacker is being reported as a Somali refugee by some news organizations, including NBC News. He is believed to be an 18-to-20-year-old legal permanent resident of the U.S. who lived near campus.

At least eight people have been injured

Reports on casualties differ based on the outlet doing the reporting, but the Associated Press reports that eight people have been hospitalized, one critically. The number of victims has been reported as high as 10.

The suspect has been killed

SWAT teams descended on the campus once initial alerts were sent, and the suspect died from a gunshot wound, according to The New York Times.

Terrorism is being considered

According to CBS News, Ohio officials are entertaining the possibility that this was an act of terrorism. The FBI and ATF have been dispatched to help investigate.
