“Orange Is the New Black” star Uzo Aduba revealed to “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie on Tuesday that her breakout character Crazy Eyes came about as a crazy twist of fate.
“You actually auditioned for another part as I understand it,” Guthrie observed. “What did you think when the producers came back and said, ‘No, we have something in mind for you, it’s a character called Crazy Eyes.’”
“I started thinking to myself, ‘What in my audition would’ve made anybody say shes not quite right for the track star but she’s totally right for the crazy person?’” Aduba said. “You know what, I read it and it felt absolutely right.”

“Weren’t you only supposed to be in a couple of episodes and they saw your genius?” co-star Taylor Schilling asked Aduba.
“I was only supposes to do two episodes and maybe a third,” Aduba said. “I remember walking back with one of our producers, Lisa Vinnecour, and she said, ‘We’re going to use you more.’ And I’m like, ‘Amazing! I’m going to get to do that third episode.’”
