Penelope Cruz Drama ‘Ma Ma’ Acquired by Oscilloscope in Toronto

Moody film about life, death and romance will premiere Sept. 15 at Toronto Film Festival

Oscilloscope Laboratories has acquired the Julio Medem drama “Ma Ma,” starring Penelope Cruz.

The film, on which Cruz also serves as producer, will see its world premiere on Sept. 15 at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The latest offering from Medem (“Sex and Lucia”) has Cruz playing Magda, a single mom dealing with a “grim” medical diagnosis who finds someone equally embattled in Luis Tosar’s Arturo.

“I am thrilled to have ‘Ma Ma’ released in the U.S.,” Medem said in a statement. “Magda is a strong woman that when confronted with illness responds with unbelievable inner strength. I’m excited it will reach a U.S. audience because its message is international and Penélope’s acting really special.”

“I’m thrilled to be working with Oscilloscope. This movie is so important to me and they are the perfect partner for the project,” Cruz added.

Cruz is represented by CAA, who brokered the deal. Seville International, eOne’s boutique sales outfit, is handling international sales with eOne releasing in Spain and Canada.
