Peter Capaldi’s ‘Doctor Who’ Will Be Darker and ‘A Lot Less Patient’ (Photo)

The new doctor is a dramatic shift from his predecessor

When “Doctor Who” returns for its 8th season in August, the Time Lord will have more than just a new look. The 12th Doctor Peter Capaldi says his version of the character, taking over for Matt Smith, will be “more alien than he’s been for a while.”

Empire got the details from Capaldi, and also released a new photo of him in character.

Capaldi went on to say, “It can become a kind of franchise where it’s not a real character at all, but just an amalgam of elements that people think are Doctor Who: a scarf, a bow tie… I wanted to be the actual Doctor Who.”

However, don’t expect the warm and fuzzy feelings that Smith brought to the role, says Jenna Coleman, who plays the Doctor’s companion Clara. “With Matt’s Doctor [Clara] felt quite safe, really,” Coleman tells Empire. “She knew she’d be caught if she was in danger, but this guy is a lot less human-friendly and a lot less patient. He’s more removed and inaccessible. You can’t quite access him in the same way.”

“Doctor Who” returns for its eight season on August 23 on BBC America.
