Prince fans were given a special treat on Thursday when the pop star’s estate released his original recording of “Nothing Compares 2 U.”
Prince’s recording is from 1984, marking six years before Sinead O’Connor’s rendition of his song made it a worldwide hit.
“It was in this very room at Flying Cloud Drive Warehouse in Eden Prairie, Minnesota that Prince created and committed to tape one of his most beloved and iconic compositions,” the estate said in releasing the video, which was directed by Andrea Gelardin and Ruth Hogben.
The footage quickly began to trend on Twitter, as fans reacted emotionally to the recording. One enthusiastic fan said “nothing compares 2 u literally shatters my entire heart. it hurts in the sweetest way possible, prince was so beautiful.”
“I needed this Nothing Compares 2 U original,” another fan tweeted.
“Retweet if you got choked up while listening to @prince ‘s original recording of “nothing compares 2 U” being played over old rehearsal footage of him and the family today. #imnotcrying #yourecrying,” added another fan.
