Ronnie Claire Edwards, ‘The Waltons’ Actress, Dies at 83

Oklahoma native was best known for playing Corabeth Walton Godsey on beloved television series

Ronnie Claire Edwards, the actress who played Corabeth Walton Godsey on “The Waltons,” died Tuesday. She was 83.

Edwards died peacefully in her sleep, according to a post on her Facebook page. She lived in Dallas, Texas, and was originally from Oklahoma City.

“Our beautiful and extraordinary friend has peacefully made her final curtain call. Thank you all for your wonderful caring and support,” the message read.

Edwards is best known for playing Corabeth, the wife of storekeeper Ike Godsey (Joe Conley) on the drama centered around a family in a rural Virginia community during the Great Depression and World War II.

“The Waltons” aired for nine seasons (1972-1981) on CBS. A further six TV movies aired in the 1980s and 1990s on NBC and CBS. Series creator Earl Hamner died in March at age 92.

The actress appeared in a number of films, such as “Nobody’s Fool” (1986), with Roseanna Arquette, and “The Dead Pool” (1988), starring Clint Eastwood. Her TV credits included “Sweet Bird of Youth” (1989), Guess Who’s Coming for Christmas” (1990), “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “Dallas” and “Falcon Crest,” which was also created by Hamner.

In addition to her acting work, Edwards was the author of the memoirs “The Knife Thrower’s Assistant” and “Mr. Godsey Asked Me to Marry Him and I Said: “Yes!”: (Exit Sobbing),” which had a foreword written by Hamner.

Edwards left no immediate survivors.
