Surprise: Viggo Mortensen and “Captain Fantastic”
The well-liked actor scored a surprise Best Actor nomination — and the indie drama also pulled an upset in the ensemble film category over presumed Oscar front-runner “La La Land.”
Snub: “La La Land” enemble
Though stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone both scored nominations, the film failed to be recognized in the ensemble category. “Braveheart” was the last film to win the Best Picture Oscar without a SAG ensemble nod.
Snub: “Silence”
Just as in the Golden Globes, Martin Scorsese’s period drama was snubbed across the board — and lead actor Andrew Garfield instead scored a nomination for his work in Mel Gibson’s “Hacksaw Ridge.”
Snub: Tom Hanks, “Sully”
Mortensen’s surprise nomination edged out perennial awards magnet Tom Hanks, who turned in another memorable performance in Clint Eastwood’s biopic.
Surprise: Emily Blunt, “The Girl on the Train”
The British actress has gotten relatively attention for this genre thriller, but she managed to edge out more serious performances from Annette Bening (“20th Century Women”) and Ruth Negga (“Loving”) for a nomination.
Snub: “Loving”
Ruth Negga had been considered a serious contender in the Best Actress race, and Joel Edgerton a long-shot for Best Actor, but neither made the cut for the period drama “Loving.”
Snub: “20th Century Women”
Annette Bening picked up a Golden Globe nomination this week for her perfomance in this film and she was expected to be a contender in the SAGs.
Millie Bobby Brown, “Stranger Things”
The 12-year-old newcomer landed a nomination for Female Actor in a Drama Series — along with her Gen X co-star Winona Ryder — for the Netflix cult hit “Stranger Things.”
Surprise: Sterling K. Brown’s double play
The actor scored two nominations, for his work in the limited series “The People v. O.J. Simpson” as well as his role on the hit NBC drama “This Is Us.”
Surprise: Bryce Dallas Howard, “Black Mirror”
The actress landed a nomination for actress in a limited series despite appearing in just a single (admittedly great) episode of the Netflix sci-fi series, “Nosedive.”
Snub: Viola Davis, “How to Get Away With Murder”
Though she’s recognized for her work on Denzel Washington’s film “Fences,” the actress failed to get a nomination for her TV show — despite winning the last two years.
Snub: “Atlanta”
Donald Glover’s critically beloved comedy scored two Golden Globes nominations this week — but no love from SAG.
Snub: “Silicon Valley”
The HBO show has gotten comedy series nominations for the last three years from the Emmys and the last two from the Golden Globes, but zero recognition from SAG. Does not compute.
Surprise: Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, “Grace and Frankie”
The stars have garnered far less attention for the second season of their Netflix show but still managed to commandeer two coveted spots on the best actress in a comedy list.
Snub: Jim Parsons, “The Big Bang Theory”
The Emmy winner has scored an individual nomination for his work in the CBS sitcom for five consecutive years — but the streak was broken this year. At least he’s nominated with his co-stars in the ensemble category.
