A San Diego police officer was killed and another was wounded in a shooting Thursday night.

The two officers were members of the city’s gang unit and radioed in that they were making a traffic stop around 11 p.m. Shortly thereafter, they called for emergency backup, per CNN.

The wounded officer was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency surgery and is expected to survive, despite being wounded in the chest. Officers on the scene attempted to transport their other colleague to the hospital in their squad car, but he succumbed to the gunshot. It is reported that he had a wife and two children.

One suspect was also wounded in the incident and was taken into custody. San Diego police chief Shelley Zimmerman said it was unclear if this was an ambush or if there were multiple suspects involved.

This shooting comes on the heels of a deadly few months for law enforcement. Following the deaths of unarmed black men Philando Castile and Alton Sterling at the hands of police, tensions have been high.

Micah Johnson, a black Army veteran, killed five police officers during a rally against police brutality in Dallas on July 7. Less than two weeks later, three officers were also killed in Baton Rouge.
