“Shameless” star Steve Kazee is one of many people who is not thrilled at how his character, Gus, has been treated on the Showtime series.
“I feel like he got a really raw deal,” Kazee told TheWrap’s Stuart Brazell during a new installment of “Drinking With the Stars.” “No one was around to say, ‘Hey, you probably shouldn’t go down this road. Here’s [Fiona’s] track record.’”
But Kazee isn’t complaining, as he has thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of playing the indie rock bassist and Fiona’s husband.
“Gus has had some ups and downs over the course of two seasons,” Kazee said. “It’s been an interesting character to play in that there’s a real duality to his nature.”
But fear not, fans, Kazee says the character is down but not out. “You haven’t seen the last of Gus. He still has some things that need to be resolved,” he said.
In addition to his screen work, Kazee is a Tony-Award winning actor for his work on the stage version of the movie musical “Once.” He said that working live on the stage was excellent preparation for working in television.
“You sort of need to be quick on your feet, because things can go wrong [in theater],” he said. “It also trains you for these other moments where, on a TV set, and that anxiety and the fear starts to come in. You just remember, ‘I’ve done this in front of 1,100 people. I can just breathe and get through this.’”
“Shameless” airs Sunday at 9 p.m./8c on Showtime.
